One of the youngest of Stanly County’s municipalities, Oakboro was founded around the turn of the century in 1905 and incorporated in 1915. Several thriving industries from textiles to woodworking have set the pace for Oakboro to become a community with a healthy and growing local economy. The town is also home to a modern shopping plaza that adds many services and conveniences. Residents can enjoy quiet neighborhoods and the pleasures of small-town living in close proximity to premier recreational amenities. Water sports, boating, fishing, hiking, biking, camping, and horseback riding are popular pastimes in this panoramic Lower Piedmont region. The community of Red Cross was only recently incorporated in 2002 and is situated at the crossroads of Highways 24/27 and 205 just three miles north of Oakboro.
